About The Maldives
The Maldives is a Republic comprising of around 1200 islands, nestled in the Indian Ocean. The actual number of islands is open to debate as it varies from season to season and is very much dependant on the wind, waves and currents.

The islands are grouped into ring shaped reefs called Atolls, and there are 26 of these formations.

Approximately 200 islands are inhabited by Maldivian people and there are around 88 tourist islands. A Government ruling does not permit the combination of both.

The Maldives has a torrid history, with the Portuguese in particular being very keen to control the islands. After a short spell at the helm, the Maldivians wrestled control of the capital island Male back from the Portuguese.

In the late 1800s, the Maldives and Great Britain signed an agreement conferring protected status on the islands. In the mid 1900s, the British agreement ended and the Maldives entered the United Nations. The last British forces left the southern Maldivian islands as recently as 1976.

Today the Maldives is a Muslim Democratic Republic, and as such has strict rules regarding alcohol, drugs and pornography.

With regards to the climate, the temperature remains pretty constant throughout the year, with temperatures around 26-30° C. The amount of daily sunshine also tends to be fairly constant throughout the year and sea temperatures are usually in the region of around 26-28° C.

The Maldives are a fair distance from the UK and as such, are seen as one of the more ‘exotic’ or ‘off the beaten track’ locations for divers. However with the explosion of tourism in the Red Sea, more and more people are now looking further a-field for bigger and better diving experiences. Only a cynic would be disappointed with the diving that can be found around these islands.

Flights leave the UK on a regular basis; Emirates Airlines fly a very regular service with a 3 hr stopover in Dubai. Although the flight time is considerable compared to a jaunt to Benidorm, the quality of service and facilities available in flight make the journey seem that much more bearable.
