About Newhaven
Newhaven's long undulating pebble beach runs beneath the cliffs to the east of Brighton; about an hour and 30 minutes by car from Stansted.
The waters surrounding Newhaven offer some of the best shore diving available in Sussex waters. Underwater gullies run parallel to the shore in varying depths of 6 to 10 metres. Here all the usual inshore life can be seen such as bib, pollack, pouting, flounder, plaice, crab and lobsters. The substantial outer breakwater wall is a good dive, at the base in amongst the huge blocks of stone, crabs and lobsters have many crevices in which to hide.
Air and Nitrox fills are available from the local dive shop a short drive away.
Although dry suits are recommended, semi-dry's can be comfortably worn from June to October when the water temperature has generally reached 17 degrees. Visibility varies due to weather and tide from 1 to 20 metres.
Dive Trip
Details
We meet at Newhaven's west beach car park around 10am and, taking our dive gear, picnic/BBQ down to the beach, make camp for the day. This trip is ideal for non-diving family members to come along and spend a relaxing day on the beach with lovely walks beneath the cliffs, rock pools at low tide and a sandy beach the other side of the breakwater wall. Two shore dives are planned, both of which are supervised.
