About Scapa Flow
Scapa Flow has been used as an anchorage since the days of the Vikings, and through two world wars. Situated on the north East coast of Scotland it is a large expanse of water surrounded by a ring of Islands known as the Orkney Isles. Scapa Flow is a natural harbour providing shelter to the worse of the weather, being blown out on a dive is rare, and Scapa Flow is with out doubt the finest wreck diving location in the UK.
Dive Trip Details
A typical day in Scapa Flow would start by leaving the pier at around 8am the first dive being about one hour away giving you ample time for cereal, tea and toast etc. Being one of the first boats on site you would be entering the water at around 9am after which the Big Breakfast awaits you onboard, you really shouldn't need to eat for the rest of the day.
All the wrecks within the flow are usually shotted, and within an hours steam from Stromness. I should say here that we strongly advise the use of some sort of SMB, of course your are welcome to use the shot line if you can find it, but if you can't well I won't go in to the possibilities of that one. After your most excellent dive the boat will come and pick you up. We usually take a couple of hours for lunch before your second dive, and are usually finished and back in Stromness for about 5pm, but there are no hard and fast rules on this one as this is just an example of an average day in Scapa Flow.
There are various ways to travel to Scapa Flow. Road, rail, air etc. It's up to you how you wish to travel but I would expect most of us to hire a mini bus and van and all travel up together. We can either drive to Aberdeen or Scrabster and get a Ferry to Stromness so this may mean an extra nights accommodation somewhere on the outward and return journey to break up the journey. All costs for travelling up this way will be split between us all and we will all take turns with the driving.
